Heavy Ions at LHC: A Quest for Quark-Gluon Plasma

Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD), the theory of strong interactions, predicts a transition of the usual matter to a new phase of matter, called Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), at sufficiently high temperatures. The non-perturbative technique of defining a theory on a space-time lattice has been used to obtain this and other predictions about the nature of QGP. Heavy ion collisions at the Large Hadron Co...

Quark and gluon tagging at the LHC.

Being able to distinguish light-quark jets from gluon jets on an event-by-event basis could significantly enhance the reach for many new physics searches at the Large Hadron Collider. Through an exhaustive search of existing and novel jet substructure observables, we find that a multivariate approach can filter out over 95% of the gluon jets while keeping more than half of the light-quark jets....

The quark-gluon plasma at RHIC

I present a theory-guided review of RHIC data, arguing that they provide strong evidence for formation of a thermalized quark-gluon plasma at RHIC. Strong radial flow reflects high thermal pressure in the reaction zone. Large elliptic flow proves that the pressure builds up quickly and the system thermalizes on a very short time scale of < 1 fm/c. The observed hadron yields are consistent with ...

Quark–gluon plasma at the RHIC and the LHC: perfect fluid too perfect?

Relativistic heavy-ion collisions have reached energies that enable the creation of a novel state of matter termed the quark–gluon plasma. Many observables point to a picture of the medium as rapidly equilibrating and expanding as a nearly inviscid fluid. In this paper, we explore the evolution of experimental flow observables as a function of collision energy and attempt to reconcile the obser...
